In a welcome move towards a greener planet, Scottish Power, the providers of electricity for Scotland in the UK, brought down the chimneys of its Cockenzie Power Station. While the event on 26th September 2015 was quite a treat to watch for the people gathered, it was also symbolic since the power plant was decommissioned in the year 2013. The reason for its closure: A 2005 report that found that the power plant emitted too much Carbon dioxide for the energy it was generating. Interestingly, the Hazelwood Power Station in Australia that topped the list, is still up and running and so is the Frimmersdorf Power Station in Germany (Third on this list).
But it's nice to know that at least some people care about the harm they are doing to the environment. Way to lead the world, Scotland. Plans are afoot to replace the coal fired power station with a natural gas powered one and also develop the area as Cruise Terminal. For now, enjoy the planned destruction of these tall chimneys.
